Professional Tank Truck Driver of the Year

ARLINGTON, Va., May 1, 2019 – At its recent 71st Annual Conference, the National Tank Truck Carriers (NTTC) crowned Barbara Herman of K Limited Carrier as the association’s 2018-2019 Professional Tank Truck Driver of the Year Grand Champion, earning her the William A. Usher, Sr. trophy. Triumphing over a stellar group of eight Champion finalists with 25 million accident-free miles between them, Barbara is the first woman to win the tank truck sector’s top driver honor.

The Professional Tank Truck Driver of the Year Award recognizes an exemplary tank truck company driver or independent contractor with the most reliable and safe transportation of liquid and dry bulk commodities. The winner represents the best the tank truck industry has to offer, with a demonstrated record of safety and a tireless involvement in community and charity organizations.

Barbara Herman has logged 1.7 million accident-free miles over her 34-year career as a driver. In her application, she said, “The most important responsibility that I carry with me each and every day is safety. With me, safety isn’t just a word, it’s a way of life.” She’s been involved with the Lutheran Emergency Response Team, the Make a Wish Foundation, Keeping Our Girls Safe, the Special Olympics for the Blind, and the Beach House Family Shelter.

In her video application, Herman recounted the moment that she knew she wanted to be a truck driver.  She was 6 years old and had just finished a ride-along with her father hauling produce in his truck. She told him as much, but he said that “women just don’t do that.” Decades later, Barbara’s father told her how proud she made him by following in his footsteps.

“I have worked with Barb for over 6 years and in all that time Barb has always had an unparalleled passion for what she does,” said Candi Coate, Vice President of Safety and Regulatory Compliance at K-Limited Carrier. “Having grown up in trucking, she has a deep appreciation and respect for her peers and others in the industry. Barb is a consummate professional. It’s an exciting time for all women in trucking. It’s an awesome career path for men and woman alike and Barb is a perfect example of how successful and satisfying that path can be.”

“Congratulations to Barb and the whole team at K-Limited Carrier,” said NTTC President Dan Furth. “Our industry is extremely proud of the many career opportunities for women in the workplace and K-Limited serves as a fine example given that it’s owned and managed by its indefatigable COO and President Kim Kaplan.”

As the Professional Tank Truck Driver of the Year, Herman will attend NTTC’s events to speak on the importance and value of safety. She will also serve as a spokesperson for NTTC, offering the perspective of the drivers whose hard work is the backbone of the tank truck industry.
